Our Mission
FashionTeens began as a small program 15 years ago at Mission Hill Middle School and has grown into a countywide celebration of youth creativity, sustainability, and self-expression. For many students, FashionTeens is not only their introduction to the arts but also their first opportunity to see their voice, identity, and culture celebrated publicly. In an era where young people face increasing pressures—from social media to academic stress to economic uncertainty—having an outlet for creativity is vital for mental health and social-emotional growth. FashionTeens provides that outlet in a way that is visible, affirming, and joyful. Our program has expanded to ensure that students from traditionally underserved communities, including Watsonville, have equal opportunities to participate. We have eliminated financial barriers, provided bilingual applications, and secured donated materials so no student is excluded. We also provide transportation support and have expanded workshops into schools and community spaces, giving students access to mentors, resources, and a safe place to create. The results are powerful. Each year, students who may have never considered themselves “artists” step onto the runway transformed—not just in appearance, but in confidence. Many return year after year, growing in both skill and self-assurance. Alumni have gone on to study fashion, art, and design in higher education, and some have even walked professional runways. But perhaps the most important outcomes are less visible: the shy student who discovers community in a workshop, the group who collaborates with their families to bring cultural traditions to life on stage, or the neurodivergent student who thrives through creative problem-solving. FashionTeens reflects the values of Santa Cruz County: innovation, sustainability, community, and inclusion. Students create fashion pieces from recycled or repurposed materials, sparking conversations about environmental awareness while showcasing ingenuity. They design not only for themselves, but for the community—bringing families, educators, and peers together in celebration. Our vision is to deepen these connections. By expanding workshops countywide, strengthening partnerships, and cultivating spaces that embrace diversity in all forms, we will ensure that FashionTeens remains relevant, inclusive, and inspiring for years to come.
